The false heather, Hawaiian heather or Elfin herb. Full of phenolic compounds...

Cuphea is a small evergreen shrub native to Mexico, Guatemala and Honduras.

Laden with lush lilac petals, she lights up our gardens all year long with its everlasting blossom

Studies show this pretty plant possesses antioxidant, cholesterol-lowering and mild antitumor properties from its cytotoxic content. (Ref1.)

Plants which contain phenolic compounds possess antioxidant properties.

These antioxidants play an important role to protect against damage caused by oxidative stress.

Oxidative stress occurs when the body develops an imbalance between the production of free radical scavengers and its ability to detoxify their detrimental effects with the neutralization of antioxidants. (Ref2.)

Some causes of oxidative stress:

  • diets high in fat, sugar, and processed foods.

  • exposure to radiation.

  • smoking cigarettes or other tobacco products.

  • alcohol consumption.

  • certain medications.

  • pollution.

  • exposure to pesticides or industrial chemicals.
